EucaLand – European Culture expressed in Agricultural Landscapes

Project overview

Within the scope of the “Culture Programme 2007 – 2013” the EucaLand project investigates European Agricultural Landscapes (EALs). To consider the EALs as part of the cultural heritage, including the values and meaning they have for the people of Europe today. In this context, the project aims to describe these landscapes from past to present, in view of a common debate and classification.

The final goal is to reach general recommendations on alternative ways to deal with future agricultural landscapes, more culturally and sustainable oriented, addressed not only to scientists and planners, but also to policy makers and especially to the people of Europe.

Implementation

EALs are facing rapid change due not only to economic and political conditions, but also to the enlargement of the European Union. Consequently, traditions are vanishing and vernacular cultural landscapes threatened. EucaLand will widely demonstrate how and why the Europeans are still so closely connected to their agricultural landscape as part of their cultural heritage, and how this endangered heritage can be still passed to future generations.

Partnership

41 partners from 27 countries covering North-South and East-West Europe will gather together their knowledge on the topic, linking with the European Landscape Convention (ELC) and the World Heritage Convention (WHC). The EucaLand project aims at consolidating a large European network of institutions with interdisciplinary and intercultural vision for long-term cooperation on EALs. The partnership varies form scientist, practitioners, governments and NGOs, at national and international level.

Work packages and duration

The EucaLand project is divided into 6 Work packages with a duration of 2 years (2007- 2009). In collaboration with the Government of lower Austria, Department of Rural Development LF 6 (christian.steiner@noel.gv.at), the consulting office Schabl & Partner participates as a associated partner in the work packages WP 5 and WP 6.

EucaLand – Europäische Kultur vergegenwärtigt in Agrarlandschaften

Projektüberblick

Im Rahmen des “Kultur Programms 2007 – 2013” untersucht das EucaLand Projekt europäische Agrarlandschaften (EALs). Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die „Werte und die Bedeutung“ welche die EALs für den Menschen in Europa haben. In diesem Zusammenhang, beabsichtigt das Projekt mit Blick auf eine gemeinschaftliche Erörterung und Klassifikation, diese Landschaft von der Vergangenheit bis in die Gegenwart zu beschreiben.

Als Hauptziel sollen allgemeine Empfehlungen für alternative Methoden, kulturell und nachhaltig orientiert, zur Behandlung von zukünftigen Agrarlandschaften für die breite Öffentlichkeit skizziert werden. Diese Empfehlungen sollen als sinnvolle Leitfäden für Bürger, Politiker, Wissenschaftler und Planer genutzt werden um „vergangene Kultur“ lesbar zu machen.

Umsetzung

EALs werden nicht nur infolge von ökonomischen und politischen Gegebenheiten mit einem rasanten Wandel konfrontiert, sondern auch auf Grund der Erweiterung der EU. Infolgedessen verschwinden Brauchtümer und landestypische Kulturlandschaft ist bedroht. EucaLand wird weitgehend vorzeigen, wie und warum die Europäer nach wie vor so eng mit ihrer Agrarlandschaft als Teil ihres Kulturerbes verbunden sind und wie dieses gefährdete Erbe für zukünftige Generationen weitergegeben werden kann

Projektpartner

Projektpartner sind 41 Partner aus 27 Ländern. Diese decken Nord-Süd und Ost-West Europa ab. Gemeinsam sollen diese ihr kulturlandschaftliches Fachwissen, gekoppelt mit der „European Landscape Convention“ (ELC) und der „World Heritage Convention“ (WHC), erfassen. Das EucaLand Projekt bezweckt eine Zusammenführung von Einrichtungen mit interdisziplinärer und interkultureller Herangehensweise. Hinsichtlich europäischer Agrarlandschaften (EALs) soll damit ein europäisches Netzwerk für eine langfristige Kooperation gebildet werden.

Arbeitspakete und Projektdauer

Das EucaLand Projekt ist in 6 Arbeitspakete unterteilt und für eine Laufzeit von 2 Jahren (2007 - 2009) projektiert. In Zusammenarbeit mit der niederösterreichischen Landesregierung, Abteilung LF 6 „ländliche Entwicklung“ (christian.steiner@noel.gv.at) beteiligt sich das Büro Schabl & Partner an den beiden Arbeitspaketen WP 5 und WP 6.
